However, there may be occasions where you require more advanced services including diagnosis and treatment for TMJ and bruxism.

What is TMJ & Bruxism?

Bruxism is the medical term for teeth grinding and clenching and often this is a nocturnal habit. The stress created by bruxism can cause considerable damage to teeth and to the temporomandibular joints or jaw joints, potentially causing a painful condition called TMJ where these joints become inflamed.

Diagnosing and Treating TMJ & Bruxism

Symptoms of bruxism include waking up with a sore or aching jaw or with a chronic headache and you may notice your teeth have begun to look chipped or worn down. Sometimes people are alerted to this problem by their sleeping partner as teeth grinding can be noisy. If you recognise any of these symptoms or are concerned you may have bruxism, make an appointment to see us here at FamilyONE Dental. Our dentist can quickly diagnose any symptoms and may take digital dental x-rays and an OPG x-ray to assess any damage to your jaw joints. Often bruxism can be simply treated with a custom-made night splint. This will fit comfortably over your teeth preventing contact during sleep. We can also provide suitable restorative treatments for teeth damaged by bruxism.

If you do need additional advanced services, we can provide referrals to trusted local specialists.
