Root canal treatment or endodontics is a procedure designed to protect and preserve badly infected teeth. Endodontic treatment removes the infected pulp so the tooth can be fully restored with a filling or a full crown. The pulp is the innermost part of a tooth containing nerves and blood vessels. Once treatment is completed, your tooth should be strong and stable as an adult tooth doesn’t require a pulp to survive.
When Would I Need Root Canal Treatment?
You may require this procedure if a tooth pulp becomes infected and inflamed. Infection can occur if you have a cavity or a leaky filling or if bacteria have been able to enter your tooth through a chip or crack. A pulp may become inflamed if your tooth receives a knock or blow.
What Are the Symptoms of a Tooth Infection?
A tooth infection is generally rather painful and the affected tooth may throb continuously or will be uncomfortable whenever you bite down. You may notice the gum around the tooth is red or swollen and if the infection is particularly bad then a small pimple may form on the gums.
