We continually evaluate the development of children’s teeth and jaws and may recommend an early orthodontic evaluation if appropriate. An early orthodontic evaluation can take place as soon as age five or six. This won’t necessarily mean your child needs treatment right away, but it does allow our dentist to identify the best age for any orthodontic treatment to take place.
What are the Advantages of Early Treatment?
An early evaluation can be extremely useful, particularly if a child has oral habits such as thumb or finger sucking. These habits can affect the development of the teeth and jaws and sometimes it is possible to correct these problems with removable appliances that help to guide jaw growth. Early treatment can be specifically timed to take advantage of your child’s growth spurts, gently guiding their jaws into the correct positions and helping to create an optimal facial profile. Sometimes early treatment can reduce the time needed for braces when they are in their teens.
